Department of geology

In commemoration of the 100th birth anniversary of our revered Prof. Ajit Kumar Saha (1925–1997), the Geological Institute, Department of Geology, Presidency University invites you to the Prof. A. K. Saha Memorial Lecture – Birth Centennial Lecture.

The event will be held on Wednesday, 14 May 2025 at 4:00 PM at Derozio Hall, Presidency University, Kolkata, and will feature a lecture by Prof. Saibal Gupta from IIT Kharagpur, titled "Continents, water, life... on Earth and beyond – the geologists' story".

The Geological Institute welcomes all alumni, faculty and students to this lecture.

Presidency University has a significant historical background as one of Asia's first Western-style higher education institutes. Founded in 1817 as Hindoo College, it later became Presidency College and was upgraded to Presidency University in 2010.

The Department of Geology, established in 1892, is the oldest geology teaching department in India. Its alumni have made significant contributions to geological sciences, academia, and industry while fostering groundbreaking research and collaborations..
