Presidency University has a significant historical background as one of Asia's first Western-style higher education institutes. Founded in 1817 as Hindoo College, it later became Presidency College and was upgraded to Presidency University in 2010.
The Department of Geology, established in 1892, is the oldest geology teaching department in India. Its alumni have made significant contributions to geological sciences, academia, and industry while fostering groundbreaking research and collaborations..

The Geological Institute, Department of Geology, Presidency University invites you to the 2nd Prof. A. K. Saha Memorial Lecture.
The event will be held on Wednesday, 13 May 2026 at 12:00 PM (IST) at P.C. Mahalanobis Hall, Presidency University, Kolkata, and will feature a lecture by Dr. Vineet Kumar Gahalaut, Director, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, titled "Crustal deformation and strain rate of the Indian plate".
